After his single “There Was This Girl” went to number one earlier this year, everyone has been waiting for Riley Green‘s debut album. On Friday (9/20) that day came as the BMLG recording artist released his highly anticipated debut album Different ‘Round Here. The Alabama native delivered, looking to his roots and the music he was born and raised on as the inspiration for this album.
There is a definite resonating sound and theme throughout Different’ Round Here. The classic country sound rings strong in each song and Riley has the vocals to support it. Keeping it clean and simple, he isn’t here to over-complicate his music or be something he isn’t and this is why fans love his music. From being in love to dealing with heartbreak or living life, Riley’s songs cover the full gamut.
The aforementioned #1 single is the perfect song to kick off this album. Many guys can relate to falling in love with a girl who gets them in trouble and has them living life on the edge, and girls can relate to being the girl in the front row ready to steal your heart. “There Was This Girl” is fun, catchy and energetic, making it one of those songs that after to listening to it, you catch yourself belting it out.
“Same Old Song” pulled me in from the first chords. This tune takes me back to 90’s country and the message resonates strongly. It doesn’t matter if you get rich, you would still be the same person. You would still wear the same clothes and hit up your favorite spots. This song confirms that Riley will always remember his small town upbringing:
And I’d fish this same ol’ hole, hunt these same ol’ woods
Wouldn’t change one thing even if I could
Drink these same ol’ Coors, wear these same ol’ boots
Be the same ol’ me lovin’ the same ol’ you
Be the same road, same truck, same town
Singin’ the same old song
Riley slows it down with “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” a song full of sentiment and memories. From wishing that high school home teams never lost, beer never ran out, first kisses could happen again, to grandpa’s never dying – it’s a beautiful message in today’s world.
“Get That Man A Beer” is a breakup song from afar. When you see that your ex gets married and leaves the other guy high and dry, you realize you dodged a bullet. She broke your heart with her wandering eyes, and now she done the same to him. After all that, the poor man just needs a beer, so if you see him out be sure to get him one.
Riley proves he’s the real thing with the title track “Different’ Round Here,” a timeless country song full of American pride. He sings of a town where folks salute the flag, serve their country, are thankful, and stay connected with their roots. Riley’s small town upbringing must have played an influential role in this song – and whole album – and it stands out.
Different’ Round Here is invigorating and a breath of fresh air! Riley Green has knocked it out of the park with creating an album that showcases his vocal abilities and is representative of old country music.
